Varuthini Ekadshi is a Hindu religious day on which Lord Vishnu's fifth incarnation Vamana, is worshipped. Ekadshi means the 11th lunar day of the month and hence Varuthini Ekadshi falls on the 11th day of the Hindu month of Chaitra (April-May).

History

In Hindu Mythology, Vamana was the son of Kashyapa and Aditi. He was the fifth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and his purpose was to restore the balance of the world by reinstating Lord Indra as the ruler of heaven instead of Mahabali.

Celebration

There are certain strict rules and procedures that are to be followed for anyone praying to Vamana on Varuthini Ekadshi. These rules were prescribed to King Yudhishtira by Krishna; according to Krishna anyone who prays to Vamana on this day gets good fortune in his current life and the next. It leads to everlasting happiness and washes away all sins.

Krishna said that charity is the greatest virtue and should be celebrated on this day. The devotees should abstain from eating certain food products such as meat, honey, spinach, chickpea, black gram, and they should also not eat too much or eat more than once. They should refrain from any sort of violence, sexual activity, gambling, drinking, lying, robbery etc.
