Akshaya Tritiya is a very important day in Hinduism as well as Jainism. It is an auspicious day because the Hindu epic Mahabharata was written by Lord Ganesha and Veda Vyas, on this day. It falls in the Hindu calendar month of Vaishakha, on the third lunar day, also called "Tithi'.

It sometimes is also the day on which the birthday of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu is celebrated but it may even fall on some other day. The word "Akshaya' means never diminishing, which is why the blessings and good fortune received by praying on this day are never ending.

Celebration

This day is said to be very lucky to start new projects, such as business, construction, etc. and anyone who starts new ventures on this day is guaranteed success. Gold has a lot of significance in Hindu mythology, which is why many purchase ornaments and jewellery made of gold on this day, which leads to more wealth and prosperity.

It is also very significant because this day is ruled by the Hindu supreme God, Lord Vishnu, the protector of the world. The Indian holy river Ganges is said to have disembarked from heaven to the realm of men, on this day.
