Day 6: Katyayini Puja

Goddess Katyayini is the sixth Roop of Goddess Durga and is one of the main avatars of goddess durga during the 9 days. Being the 6th roop, she is worshipped on the 6th day of Navratri. She is represented by a goddess with 4 hands; upper left hand has a sword, lower left hand has lotus. The right hands represent mudras or positions. The goddess represent the supreme power to kill demons and end tyranny.  Worshipping goddess Katyayini brings happiness, prosperity and fulfills ones wishes. She is humble towards her devotees.

Long ago, there was a Maharishi named Maharishi Kat. His son, born under the clan of Katya was named as Katyayan. Rishi Katyayan was the devotee of Goddess Durga and worshipped to please her. Being pleased by the devotion, Katyayan wished that she takes the birth of his daughter in the next birth. Goddess Durga accepted his wish. After sometime when the powers or “Prakop” of Mahishasur crossed its limits, all the deities Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh prayed Goddess Durga to end the evil of Mahishasur. She took the responsibility on her shoulder and ended his Prakop. She is called Katyayini as she is the daughter of Rishi Katya.
