Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu calendar month Chaitra. On this day many devotees go to Hanuman temples to pray for strength and energy.   According to Hindu mythology, Hanuman is the son of Anjana and Vayu, the god of wind. He is the Vanara god and was an avid follower of Ram. He is worshipped for his kindness, strength and mainly for his role in the Indian epic Ramayana. To pray to Hanuman, people chant the Hanuman Chalisa, a devotional hymn so that they are blessed with strength, wisdom, courage and chastity.  Since Hanuman Jayanti is a major festival in India it is celebrated with great vitality and zest. The age old tradition is to visit a Hanuman temple and take part in devotional prayers that take place from dawn to dusk. Also, it is important to apply a red tilak on the forehead of his sculpture, along with offering sweets to the idol. After all the rituals are completed, food is distributed among the poor as an act of devotion to Hanuman.
