History of Kurma Jayanti

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurma to help the Gods in their war against the Demons. Once, the gods lost all of their strength due to a curse. They then decided to churn the ocean of milk after putting medicines in it so as to achieve nectar of immortality. Since the gods could not do this alone; they asked the help of the demons, promising them a share of the nectar in return. Even with the joint strength of the demons, the churning proved to be too difficult and at this point, Kurma appeared to help them, by lifting the churning stick on his back.
