Amavasya is a very sacred and religious day in Hinduism. Many important festivals are celebrated on this day since it is believed to be a fortuitous day. On this day many people depict their devotion by praying to various gods. And also their forefathers in the hope that they will be blessed with good fortune.
It gets its name from the Vaishakha month of the Hindu calendar. And is called so because it falls in this month. It is celebrated on the no moon day of this month. Vaishakha month corresponds with the April/May month in the Georgian calendar. It is also called Shani Jayanti, in some states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
Significance of Vaishakha Amavasya
On this day many believe that it is important to pay your respects to your forefathers who are responsible for your existence. The whole family is required to pray together without any interference, such as travel, work, etc. Donations are made to local temples to appease the forefathers. This is done through food such as rice and sugar. This ritual is said to bring good fortune for the family, clear all hurdles and obstacles.
