Neeraj Chopra, left his indefinite mark on the world on August 7, 2021 by winning Gold Medal in Tokyo Olympics Track and Field athletics in Javelin sports. 

People have started recognising Javelin sports only because of his incredible win. It is a light spear, historically used as a ranged weapon to fight a distant enemy. 

Neeraj Chopra’s Gold Medal Journey

  • His overweight issue brought him to Shivaji Stadium in Panipat to pursue any sports activities. However, soon he chose Javelin throw and started practicing it regularly.

 

  • Later on, because of a lack of Javelin equipment in Panipat, he joined his first senior level coach Naseem Ahmad at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula. There his Javelin training went on from 2011 till 2015.
    He had already turned into the U-16 public Javelin Hero while he was still training in Panchkula.

    According to his coach Naseem Ahmad he always knew that “Neeraj would make India Proud in the Olympics, as he had the hunger to do well and become a top-notch athlete.”

 

  • Then in 2015, Neeraj Chopra Joined Dayanand Anglo-Vedic College Chandigarh, incidentally this college has seen many sports persons like Kapil Dev, Sukhbir Singh Gill (hockey) and Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (football) to name a few.

There is a long list of achievements before his Gold at Olympics

  • His first medal in a National Senior Championship came during the Inter-State Event 2015 in Chennai.

 

  • Followed by a Gold Medal in the National Open Championships in Kolkata.

 

  • Further his Gold medal win at the South Asian Games in Guwahati with a toss of 82.23m in 2016 proved a huge leap forward in his career.

 

  • He continued to upscale his Javelin skills and worked even harder under the direction of Uwe Hohn, Gary Calvert, and Werner Daniels.

The Indian Army, dazzled with his performance at National and International competitions, decided to make Neeraj Chopra a Junior Commission Officer in 2017. He was directly appointed in the Rajputana Rifles as a Junior Commissioned Officer with the rank of ‘Naib Subedar’.

As soon as Neeraj Chopra joined the Army he got selected for training at the Army Sports Institute in Pune under ‘Mission Olympics Wing’.  And thus his Olympics Journey got propelled to a new height.

In due course, his incredible Gold medal in the Commonwealth Games and at the Asian Games in 2018 earned him everybody’s confidence in him for the Olympics medal. In Commonwealth Games he was the first Indian ever to win a Gold Medal in javelin throw.

These accolades only added to his confidence ahead of the Tokyo Olympics 2021 

Finally, the Tokyo Olympics 2021 Gold Medal happened to him. And since then there has been no turning back and he continues to rise.

I remember watching his spectacular  performance that day, none came close to Neeraj Chopra’s Javelin throw. After his second attempt everybody knew he had set a massive score of 87.58 m for others. An thus he became the second Indian in an Individual event to win a Gold medal after Abhinav Bindra. 

However, the International Olympic Committee, considers Neeraj Chopra as the second Olympic track and field medalist for India. As there is a Olympics record of Pritchard,  who had won the first Silver medal while representing India in the year 1900 Paris Olympics. 

Anyhow, Neeraj Chopra’s best score, outstanding performance on the ground in Tokyo made the long wait worthwhile. 

He dedicated his win to legendary sprinter late Milkha Singh immediately after winning the Gold Medal. Milkha Singh always wished to see an Indian athlete clinch a medal in the Olympics.

Proud Moment

Nation will remain proud of this moment for decades to come. It was an ecstatic moment for his family and the entire Khandra Village in Panipat.  Everybody at Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula, DAV College in Chandigarh, Rajputana Rifles in the Indian Army celebrated his Olympics Gold. Indeed it was a historic inspirational win for many who aspire to excel in Javelin Sport.

  • Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) – 2022 
  • Padma Shri – 2022 

The ‘Army force Sports Institute (ASI) Stadium’ of Pune cantonment was renamed as “Neeraj Chopra Stadium” by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on 27 August 2021.

 

Recently Neeraj Chopra was part of the ‘India-UK Week of Sport’ event which the British Government conducted to commemorate India’s 75th year of Independence.

And once again, for his exemplary achievements he has also been nominated for the esteemed Laureus ‘World Breakthrough of the Year’ award.

Neeraj Chopra’s Prolific achievements in Javelin sports has rekindled India’s medal hope from Athletics.
